Having won a case for water rights as part of the public domain, Clay is threatened by wealthy rancher Virgil Britt. Britt does not want to move his fence line according to Judge Marsh’s ruling. Outside the courtroom, he tries to get Clay to draw his gun and boasts that the lawyer’s days are numbered.  After witnessing Clay’s courtroom victory and cool demeanor, a hillbilly named Roy Tagger tries to get Clay to take his case. Tagger is recently released from jail with cold-blooded murder in mind. Clay refuses the case because he does not want to be an accessory to the crime. Later that day, Virgil Britt is gunned down and in his dying breath frames Clay with the crime!  How can the clever counselor free himself to investigate the murder? Will Gib help him or turn his back on the young lawyer?
